From the Farm, 8/29/14: Fort Wayne Loses Despite Four Jake Bauers Hits

The playoff hopes of the Padres two, full-season Single-A affiliates took hits Friday night.

Fort Wayne suffered a 12-9 loss to West Michigan in the TinCaps’ final home game of the season to fall a game behind in the race for the final wildcard berth in the Midwest League. The TinCaps drew 6,664 for their final home game to set a franchise single-season attendance record of 406,715.

Lake Elsinore was shut out 9-0 by Rancho Cucamonga at The Diamond to slip into third (but only one game behind) in the race for the California League South Division’s second-half title. The Storm has clinched a playoff berth.

Both Fort Wayne and Lake Elsinore have three games to play.

ON THE MOVE: There were no moves in the Padres minor league system Friday.

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (69-72): Salt Lake 8, CHIHUAHUAS 6 – With their five-game winning streak snapped, El Paso has to win their final three games to finish .500 on the season. 2B-SS Jace Peterson (.295) was 2-for-3 with his sixth triple for two RBIs. DH Jonathan Galvez (.282) was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. 3B Alex Castellanos (.272) had two doubles in four at-bats with two runs scored. CF Rico Noel (.254) was 2-for-4 with a RBI. C Adam Moore (.295) was 2-for-4 with a double. Starting LHP Juan Pablo Oramas (7-7) allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings. RHP Keyvius Sampson (6.75) allowed a hit with two walks while striking out two in two-thirds of a scoreless inning. RHP Michael Nix (4.68) allowed a run on four hits with three strikeouts in three innings. RHP Donn Roach (5.31) allowed a run on a hit in an inning.

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (67-70, 31-36): Midland 3, MISSIONS 2 – San Antonio also needs to sweep its final three games to finish .500. Starting RHP Josh Geer (3.58 ERA) allowed two runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in seven innings. RHP Adys Portillo (2.62) allowed a walk while striking out the side in his inning. RHP Luis De La Cruz (6-9, 2.72) allowed an unearned run (thanks to his own errant throw) on a hit and a walk with a strikeout in an inning to suffer the loss. SS Diego Goris (.233) was 2-for-4 with a RBI. 1B Cody Overbeck (.239) was 2-for-4.CF Hunter Renfroe (.238) was 1-for-3 with a RBI. RF Alex Dickerson was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored.

SINGLE-A high LAKE ELSINORE (73-64, 33-34): Rancho Cucamonga 9, STORM 0 – Starting RHP Bryan Rodriguez (8-9, 4.16 ERA) allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts in five innings. LHP Chris Nunn (4.40) allowed a walk with a strikeout in an otherwise perfect inning. RHP Coby Cowgill (6.59) allowed four runs on four hits and two walks with a strikeout in 1 1/3 innings. RHP Alan Oaks (6.10) allowed two runs (one earned) on a hit and a walk with a strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.

SINGLE-A low FORT WAYNE (60-76, 30-37): West Michigan 12, TIN CAPS 9 – 1B Jake Bauers (.298) was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. RF Franmil Reyes (.249) was 3-for-5 with a RBI. 2B Josh Van Meter (.253) was 2-for-5. C Ryan Miller (.246) hit a two-run, pinch-hit homer. Starting RHP Cody Hebner (2-5, 4.64) allowed seven runs on eight hits in an inning-plus. RHP Tyler Wood (7.53) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk with a strikeout in four innings. RHP Erik Cabrera (5.15) had a strikeout in two perfect innings. RHP Jorge Guzman (3.11) struck out two in a perfect inning.

SINGLE-A (short season) EUGENE (30-43, 15-20): Vancouver 4, EMERALDS 2 – LF Yale Rosen (.258) homered in a second straight game. Starting RHP Michael Kelly (7-5, 4.05 ERA) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts in six innings. RHP Samuel Holland (2.27) allowed three hits with a strikeout in two scoreless innings. RHP Max Beatty (4.50) allowed a run on a hit and a walk with a strikeout in an inning.

ARIZONA ROOKIE PADRES (20-36, 12-16): The Arizona Rookie League regular season ended Thursday. Center fielder Michael Gettys, the Padres second-round pick in June, made the ARL All-Star team. He hit .310 with eight doubles, five triples and three home runs for 38 RBIs in 52 games. He had a .353 on-base percentage. OF Jordan Paroubek, the Padres’ second-round pick in 2013, hit .286 with four homers and 24 RBIs but was limited to 34 games. 2B Luis Urias hit .310 in 43 games. Left-hander Taylor Aikenhead was 4-0 with a 1.19 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings. Left-handed reliever Elvin Liriano was 1-1 with a 1.34 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings. Left-hander Kyle McGrath had a 0.79 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings.
